Should I back up the software?
Author:
Ginkgo Software Support
If you have any data on your computer that is valuable or mission-critical, you should be doing daily backups. It doesn't matter how new your computer is, computers can and do fail regularly, often leaving you without critical data.
The biggest problem reported by our users is file corruption. This can occur when your power goes out or when someone does a 'hard shut-down' and turns the computer off before closing ClientTracker. Once files have been corrupted, you may be able to repair them yourself using the 'recover files' command in Settings. Or, if you've made a recent backup (before, not after the problem occurred!) then you can restore to backup from the Settings screen.
If these steps fail to solve the problem, then we can repair your files and, in most cases, get all of your data back for you. Unless you are under a support contract, the cost for this is usually $75. If you have a current support contract there is no charge. Other problems that can occur are hard disk errors, in which case having a backup on another drive is your only hope of saving your data.
We strongly advise all ClientTracker users to follow these three procedures:
1. Make regular backups to a second drive (usb ‘thumb’ drives are an inexpensive option) to protect you against drive corruption. This can be done automatically using inexpensive backup software. Second Copy is a good user-friendly option for Windows ($30 - http://www.centered.com/), and if you’re a Macintosh user you can download a good backup program from Econ ($30 - http://www.econtechnologies.com/site/Pages/ChronoSync/chrono_overview.html). The folder to backup is:
Windows XP: C:\Program Files\Ginkgo Software\ClientTracker 3.41
Windows Vista: Desktop\Your Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Ginkgo
Software\ClientTracker 3.41
OS X: Applications/ClientTracker 3.41
2. Keep ‘Enable Automatic Backup’ checked in ClientTracker to protect you against file corruption. Daily is a good frequency.
3. Set up an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to protect against power events like blackouts and brownouts. These devices will keep power going to your computer long enough so you can properly shut down your software without anything being damaged. Some will even shut down software automatically.
